Single-Tooth Whitening Q & A
What Is Single-Tooth Whitening?
Single-tooth whitening is a cosmetic procedure used to brighten a single tooth that has become discolored, often following trauma or root canal treatment. Unlike traditional teeth whitening, which lightens multiple teeth at once, this procedure targets only the affected tooth to restore a more natural, even appearance.
A tooth may darken when the pulp inside the tooth has been damaged by injury or disease, or after root canal treatment. Internal whitening can often significantly improve the color of the tooth without the need for more extensive restorative treatment.
Why Might I Need Single-Tooth Whitening?
Your dentist or endodontist may recommend single-tooth whitening if you have:
- A tooth that has darkened following root canal treatment
- Discoloration caused by dental trauma
- An otherwise healthy tooth with internal staining
- A noticeable color difference between one tooth and the surrounding teeth
- A desire to improve the appearance of your smile while preserving your natural tooth
Single-tooth whitening is an excellent option for many patients who want a conservative, minimally invasive solution for improving the appearance of a discolored tooth.
What Happens During Single-Tooth Whitening?
The whitening procedure is performed after your endodontist confirms that the root canal treatment is healthy and the tooth is free of infection.
1. Examination and Diagnosis
Your endodontist will examine the tooth and obtain digital X-rays if needed to ensure the root canal treatment is successful and there are no signs of infection or other underlying problems.
2. Preparing the Tooth
A small opening is made through the existing filling or restoration to access the inside of the tooth. A protective barrier is placed to seal the root canal filling and protect it during the whitening process.
3. Placement of the Whitening Material
A specialized whitening agent is placed inside the tooth, where it works from the inside out to gradually lighten the discoloration.
4. Temporary Seal
The opening is temporarily sealed, allowing the whitening material to remain inside the tooth for several days. Depending on the amount of discoloration, this process may be repeated over one or more visits until the desired shade is achieved.
5. Final Restoration
Once the tooth has reached the desired color, the whitening material is removed and the access opening is permanently sealed with a durable filling to restore the tooth.
Is Single-Tooth Whitening Safe?
Yes. Single-tooth whitening is a safe and well-established procedure when performed on an appropriately treated tooth. Your endodontist will carefully evaluate the tooth before treatment to ensure it is healthy enough for internal whitening.
The procedure is conservative and helps improve the appearance of your natural tooth without removing unnecessary tooth structure.
How Does Single-Tooth Whitening Benefit My Smile?
Single-tooth whitening offers several important benefits, including:
- Brightens a discolored tooth from the inside
- Restores a more natural, uniform smile
- Preserves your natural tooth
- Minimally invasive compared with crowns or veneers
- Improves confidence in your smile
- Can often eliminate the need for more extensive cosmetic treatment
