CBCT (3D CT Scan) Imaging Q & A
What Is a CBCT (3D CT Scan)?
Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT), commonly called a 3D CT scan, is an advanced imaging technology that allows your endodontist to view your teeth, roots, jawbone, and surrounding structures in three dimensions.
Unlike traditional dental X-rays, which produce two-dimensional images, a CBCT scan provides highly detailed 3D images. This enables your doctor to diagnose complex dental conditions with greater accuracy and develop the most effective treatment plan while minimizing unnecessary procedures.
Why Might I Need a CBCT Scan?
Your endodontist may recommend a CBCT scan if you have:
- Persistent tooth pain with no obvious cause on traditional X-rays
- A tooth requiring root canal treatment or retreatment
- A cracked or fractured tooth
- Dental trauma or injury
- An infection or abscess that needs further evaluation
- Complex root canal anatomy
- A suspected root fracture or root resorption
- The need for surgical planning, such as an apicoectomy
- A non-healing tooth following previous treatment
In many cases, a CBCT scan provides important information that cannot be seen on conventional dental X-rays.
What Happens During a CBCT Scan?
A CBCT scan is a quick, comfortable, and non-invasive procedure.
1. Positioning
You will be asked to stand or sit comfortably while your head is positioned in the scanner. The technician will ensure you remain still during the scan.
2. Image Acquisition
The CBCT machine rotates once around your head, capturing hundreds of images in less than a minute.
3. 3D Image Reconstruction
Specialized software combines these images into detailed three-dimensional views of your teeth, roots, bone, nerves, and surrounding tissues.
4. Evaluation
Your endodontist carefully reviews the images to identify any hidden infections, fractures, extra canals, bone loss, or other conditions that may not appear on standard X-rays.
5. Treatment Planning
The detailed information from the scan allows your doctor to create a precise, individualized treatment plan designed to provide the best possible outcome.
Is a CBCT Scan Safe?
Yes. CBCT technology uses a low dose of radiation specifically designed for dental imaging. Your endodontist will recommend a CBCT scan only when the additional diagnostic information is necessary to accurately diagnose your condition or plan your treatment.
How Does CBCT Imaging Benefit My Treatment?
CBCT imaging helps your endodontist provide more accurate and predictable care by allowing them to:
- Detect hidden infections and abscesses
- Identify extra or unusually shaped root canals
- Locate root fractures and cracks
- Evaluate bone loss and surrounding anatomy
- Plan complex root canal procedures and endodontic surgery with greater precision
- Improve treatment outcomes while helping preserve your natural teeth
