Sedation Dentistry

What is sedation dentistry?

Dominion Endodontics offers sedation dentistry to make you feel comfortable and take the edge off during dental procedures. While you remain awake during treatment and can respond to commands, you’re in a more relaxed state of mind. You might opt for sedation dentistry if you require tooth extraction, dental implant placement, a root canal, or another dental procedure.

Endodontists use advanced technology, including cardio and pulmonary monitoring equipment, to ensure each dental procedure using sedation dentistry is safe and efficient.

Is sedation dentistry right for me?

Sedation dentistry might be a good option for your dental procedure if you suffer from:

  • Severe dental anxiety
  • Past traumatic dental experiences
  • Needle phobia
  • A sensitive gag reflex
  • Difficulty getting numb
  • Sensitive teeth

Though dental procedures at Dominion Endodontics aren’t painful because your provider uses local anesthesia, the procedures can promote anxious feelings in some patients. Staying calm during procedures is important so your provider can do their job efficiently and give you the most desirable outcome.

What are the different types of sedation?

Three levels of sedation dentistry are available at Dominion Endodontics.

Nitrous oxide

Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is a special gas you breathe in to relax and calm you before your dental procedure. It’s the most common form of sedation and is effective for people with mild anxiety receiving uncomplicated procedures. You inhale gas through a rubber nose piece to become sedated. After treatment, you can resume normal activities after your procedure.

Oral conscious sedation

Oral conscious sedation offers a deeper level of relaxation than nitrous oxide. To become sedated, you take a pill before the procedure. You remain awake, but feel sleepy, relaxed, and less aware of what’s happening around you.

With oral conscious sedation, you can still move, speak, and respond to your provider’s requests. This form of sedation is beneficial if you have moderate fears about dental procedures.

IV sedation

Intravenous (IV) sedation is a deep level of sedation that requires an anesthesiologist. During deep sedation, you can receive dental treatments without remembering much about your appointment. IV sedation allows your provider to complete prolonged procedures in just one visit easily and is beneficial if you have severe dental anxiety.

Dental procedures at Dominion Endodontics aren't painful or anxiety-provoking with sedation dentistry. Schedule an appointment over the phone or online to find out if it's right for you.
